FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is SOUND healing?

Sound and vibrational healing has been thought of as a form of therapy for ages. It harnesses the vibrations yielded by Tibetan or Alchemy Crystal bowls placed on or near the body to align the chakras, boost immunity, alleviate various manifestations of pain, stress, and depression – and improve overall health. In some cases, it has even been shown to obviate the need for medication.

How does it work?

Physics teaches us that everything has a vibration, from the ground you walk on to the sounds you hear, to the blood and water in your body. But imagine that your body is like a piano that hasn’t been tuned in 25 years: it does not resonate in tune or at its full capacity.

When a bowl is struck, it produces vibrations that can positively affect your energy centers, or chakras. The vibrations of the bowls act in concert with the imperceptible vibrations of your body (breath, blood flow, digestion, brain waves) to tune, or align, your energetic centers and generate healthy cell turnover.

These vibrations can also influence the brain’s theta waves – the same brain waves we use when we sleep or mediate deeply – and positively affect the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems.

Several major medical research institutions are currently running studies on the therapeutic applications of vibro-acoustic therapy, including in pediatric oncology units and as pre-chemo therapy, as it has been shown to boost immunity. At Sound Body, Kristen helps reveal your most balanced energetic self. By providing you this insight into yourself, you can become more aware of your holistic health needs.

Where did the practice of playing bowls originate?

The modality of vibrational and sound therapy originated in the Far East and has been a trusted part of Eastern Medicine for millennia. It is believed that Tibetan bowls were used during the time of Buddha as a component and extension of meditation.

In traditional Sound Healing there are 7 bowls, each of which has a note that corresponds to one of your 7 chakras, or energy centers. Your Chakras are where your soul plugs into your body. If they are blocked, or not functioning properly, significant imbalances can occur. The beauty of the bowls is that they move this energy and cause the chakras to align. Alchemy Crystal bowls follow a Vedic system, while Tibetan bowls follow a Tibetan system.

The bowls Kristen uses are still handmade in Nepal by two specific clans who have been making the bowls for over 2,000 years.

What should I expect at my sound body session?

After meeting at the studio, you will fill out a confidential information sheet and have a consultation with Kristen about what you hope to get from the session. After, Kristen will invite you to lie on a massage table, with bowls placed on stands around your body and one between your calves. At that point, the experience varies per person. Depending on your needs and desires, as well as Kristen's intuition, Kristen will work with either crystal or Tibetan bowls.

She will play the bowls around your body, and may even align your chakras using bells. Depending on your needs, Kristen may place bowls on certain pain points and play the bowls directly on your body for a deep tissue vibration.

Indeed, you will be surrounded by vibration. It is not loud, but peaceful and calming. Often, people initially feel as though the sound is coming at them, but by the end, feel that the sound is part of them or coming from within.

During the session, you may experience energetic resistance, but Kristen is an expert at using the vibration of the bowls to break those energetic barriers. You will likely stay awake but that is up to your body. Some people fall asleep, some people snore, some people can experience a sense of warmth, or become emotional. Some may even release gas. Over the course of the session, people can experience vastly different responses. This experience is all about you and what your body and soul need from it!

After the session, some people want to talk and process some of the thoughts they had during the session, but others don't. The session is tailored to you.

What does Sound healing feel like?

The experience is different for everyone, so it's difficult to provide a blanket answer to this important question. You will feel the vibrations of the sound all around your body, and even on your body, when the bowls are placed on certain pressure points. You might want to think of it as both an aural and vibrational massage, and your mental and spiritual self will feel more clear, centered, and at peace afterwards.

How long Does a session take?

The first session lasts about 1.5-2 hours, including approximately 45 minutes of bowl playing. Kristen is responsive to you and what your body and soul seem to need. She does not rush her sessions and therefore advises you book at a time when you can (hopefully!) feel relaxed rather than pressed by scheduling commitments.

What should I wear to my session?

Wear what you are comfortable in! Unlike a massage, you will stay dressed during the entire experience, so uncomfortable or complicated clothes are to be avoided. If, however, you have a particular clothing item that is especially meaningful to you, wear that. Kristen prefers to wear white because white is the least absorbent color and reflects all the colors of the rainbow—colors which align with each chakra, allowing your body to experience the height of sound healing. But you do not have to wear white! What you wear is up to you.

How do I prepare for my session?

To prepare for sound healing, spend some time being intentional with yourself. Ask yourself what you hope to get out of it and be prepared with the answer. Sometimes the answer might be that you don't know, and simply are curious: that's okay too! Just endeavor to come into your session with an open heart and mind.
